The employee, Russell Lockard, 21, of the 3400 block of Dandelion Crescent, was was shot in the arm, but the wound wasn't life-threatening, police said.
Lockard, a Navy man working for extra money at the McDonald's on Lynnhaven Parkway near the intersection of Holland Road, was on duty at about 11:30 p.m. when two masked men robbed the store.
Police spokesman Mike Carey said the robbers apparently met in the restaurant's rest room to prepare for the crime.
The robbers got away in a red Ford Mustang, police said.
About an hour earlier, a Burger King in the 4300 block of Shore Drive was also robbed by two men who met in the rest room to prepare for the crime.
A restaurant employee who went into the rest room was forced at gunpoint to the front counter by two men who then robbed the store.
No one was hurt in that robbery. Police said the two robberies may be related.
Police could only identify the suspects as a black man and a white man, both in their 20s.
Anyone with information is asked to call 427-0000.
