Poor Ann Landers has been the target of some undeserved and ill-informed flak over her calling the pope a Polack in a recent article in The New Yorker.
She should feel no need to apologize.
Columnist Mike Royko (Perspectives, Dec. 7) comes to a gallant defense of Miss Landers' choice of words. Mr. Royko might also have summoned support for Miss Landers from Shakespeare, the greatest of all wordsmiths. The word Polack appears twice in Hamlet (Act I and Act IV). In both instances, the word is used in a neutral, straightforward and unpejorative manner.
