Fishing was slow on the Outer Banks on Wednesday except in the Manns Harbor area, and those bountiful waters will soon be off-limits to anglers seeking striped bass.
The striper season for hook and line harvest will close in all internal coastal and joint waters of the Albemarle Sound Recreational Harvest Management Area at 5 p.m. Sunday. The recreational quota of 12,000 pounds of striped bass will be met by the closure date.
Boaters trolling near the Manns Harbor bridge caught their limits of striped bass Wednesday and released fish until they tired of cranking them in. Fishing in this area has traditionally been good during periods of brisk northwest winds and strong running tides.
Most of the fish were taken on bucktails, trolled deep, and Rat-L-Traps.
The ocean beach seine fishing closed at 5 p.m. Wednesday. The quota in this fishery has been exceeded by about 58,000 pounds.
South of Oregon Inlet on Hatteras Island, speckled trout fishing was good late Tuesday afternoon along the beach behind the Cape Hatteras lighthouse and in the surf south of Cape Point. Action was nonexistent Wednesday because of strong winds, rough seas and dirty water.
No boats went offshore Wednesday because of the weather.
Striped bass fishing should remain good in the Manns Harbor area into early January.
