MARINERS' MUSEUM CELEBRATES YULETIDE

JUST AS YOUR holiday preparations come to an abrupt stop, so many of those seasonal festivities you've been wanting to partake in have halted, too.

One spot that carries on at full tilt between Christmas and New Year's is The Mariners' Museum in Newport News.

This week, visitors can meander through galleries alive with holiday music, storytelling, dancing, historical interpretations and hands-on activities representing the holiday traditions of various maritime civilizations.

``Yuletide at The Mariners' Museum'' takes place from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday. The entry fee includes museum admission: $7.50 for adults, $3.75 for ages 6 to 12; free for ages 5 and younger. A two-day Yuletide pass is available - $13 for adults, $6.50 for 6 to 12.

Daily events include:

An 18th century puppet show, ``The Death of Blackbeard'' at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.

Storyteller Felix Simmons presenting African and African-American tales at 2 p.m.

Scottish pipes and drums at 11 a.m.

Continuous demonstrations of scrimshaw and navigational instruments.

Traditional sailors' refreshments all day, from hot cider to plum pudding.

Special events include:

A Kwanzaa celebration with music, dance and stories at 1 p.m. Tuesday.

Flamenco dancing at 3:30 p.m. Friday.

Theater DuJour presenting a nautical tale, ``The Bride of Beowulf,'' at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday.

Holiday music by the Eastern Virginia Brass Trio at noon Tuesday and Wednesday.

To get to The Mariners' Museum from Norfolk, take I-64 west to Newport News. Take exit 258A; proceed 2.5 miles to the museum's entrance at the intersection of J. Clyde Morris and Warwick boulevards. Call 596-2222 for more information. by CNB
