Wherever you live in South Hampton Roads, from Virginia Beach to Courtland, there is a high school basketball tournament nearby this week.
It begins Tuesday with the 27th annual Catholic Holiday Invitational at Catholic High in Virginia Beach. Four more tournaments begin Wednesday and a fifth on Thursday.
The six boys tournaments feature 36 teams from five states and two countries. Colegio Nueva Granada from Bogota, Colombia, is entered in the Hampton Roads Holiday Tournament at Atlantic Shores.
Five of The Virginian-Pilot's top 10 teams will be in action. Maury, ranked No. 2, and No. 5 Cox are in the Catholic tournament. Atlantic Shores is No. 6. Seventh-ranked Lake Taylor is in the South Norfolk Holiday Classic at Oscar Smith and No. 8 Nansemond River is in the Pepsi Christmas Classic at Lakeland.
There is only one girls tournament, but it's a big one. The eight-team Green Run Christmas tournament includes No. 1 Princess Anne, No. 3 Kempsville and No. 9 Oscar Smith. The Cavaliers and Chiefs meet Thursday night.
