The Planning Commission presented its annual Design Awards Dec. 13 to the following winners (the comments are from the commission):
Outstanding residential development
Dickie Foster of Baymark Construction for Courthouse Estates.
Located on North Landing Road, Foster Has created a country estate atmosphere with white fencing and extensive landscaping. The subdivision is dotted with pockets of landscaping that create common areas that have a park setting with walking paths.
R.G. Moore, Woodbridge Condominiums at Glenwood.
Located off Lynnhaven Parkway and Salem Road, this community features brick, cobblestone streets with faux wooden bridges that mark the entranceway. While this is not a new development, this project has been well maintained.
Outstanding agricultural operation
Micahel Winesett, Winesett Nursery.
Winesett Nursery is a wholesale-/retail nursery located on Drum Point Road. This growing agricultural operation has flourished since opening in the late 1980s. Improvements in the last year complement the overall nursery operation.
Outstanding commercial development
Richard Maddox, Dairy Queen at 17th Street on the Oceanfront.
The Dairy Queen is an excellent example of private enterprise and city government working together to develop an outstanding project. This is the world's largest walk-up Dairy Queen with the highest gross sales in the United States.
Exceptional commercial development
Bill Gambrell and Scott Ferguson, Tautogs at Winston's Cottage.
Tautogs, a new restaurant located at 23rd Street between Atlantic and Pacific avenues, preserves a small piece of beach history. The owners have taken great care to preserve the integrity of this vintage cottage while remodeling. Many of the items removed during remodeling are used elsewhere in the decor.
Outstanding Public Project
Holiday Lights at the Beach.
This year brings the first Christmas Lights display at the Oceanfront on the Boardwalk.
Outstanding Historical Development
Bob Harvey, Atlantic Wildfowl Heritage Museum - DeWitt Cottage.
This is an excellent example of private citizens involved with a non-profit organization investing in historical preservation. DeWitt Cottage is located at Atlantic Avenue and 11th Street.
Exceptional historical development
April Lambert and Jim Hogan of the Summs Group, Church Point Manor House.
This bed and breakfast is one of the rare Surviving 19th century farmhouses in the Victorian style located in the Church Point subdivision.
Quality historical development
Carlton Hickman, Hickman House.
This private residence is located on General Booth Boulevard. It was built around 1832 in the Federal architectural style and was known as Brown's Tavern. Hickman's detailed maintenance of this property has contributed to the enhancement and preservation of the Nimmo Church Historical and Cultural District. ILLUSTRATION: File photos
