REDUCED-FAT POTATO TREAT GOES LIGHT ON CALORIES

IF YOU LIKE the crumbs in the bottom of the potato-chip bag, you'll love Smart Temptations 97% Fat Free Baked Potato Puffs.

Potato Puffs are pillows of potatoes, hollow on the inside, slightly salty on the outside. As low-calorie, low-fat snacks go, the flavor is quite good.

What's more, this new product from American Specialty Foods in Fargo, N.D., may be the perfect diet food. There are only 550 calories in a whole (5.5-ounce) bag of Potato Puffs. Regular potato chips have about 814 calories in an equal amount. Only 9 percent of calories in Potato Puffs are from fat, compared to about 60 percent in regular chips.

Potato Puffs are so light, they'll never hold up to dips. So you don't have to worry about those fat- and calorie-laden extras.

And there's more good news for the calorie-conscious: Most of the bags we opened arrived with few puffs still intact. Rather, we found a mixture of crumbs and puffs, which made them difficult to eat.

And, if you can't eat it, you can't gain weight from it.

Look for Potato Puffs in the supermarket snack aisle.
