A Virginia Beach man was killed Thursday morning when he apparently lost control of his pickup and drove head-on into a dump truck, police spokesman Lou Thurston said.
The man was identified as Todd G. Pritchard, 31, of the 2000 block of Stone Gap Drive.
The accident occurred about 9 a.m. in the 2800 block of Salem Road.
Thurston said Pritchard was driving a 1976 Chevrolet pickup east on the road when he crossed over the center lane and struck a 1996 Mack dump truck traveling west.
Pritchard, 31, was pinned inside the pickup for about 20 minutes and died at the scene shortly after being removed by rescue personnel.
No charges were anticipated against the dump truck driver, 38-year-old Melvin Williams Jr. of the 5900 block of Buckminister Lane. The dump truck, which was loaded with sand, was owned by Atlantic Foundations Inc. of Virginia Beach.
The accident is being investigated by Master Police Officer John Lourenco of the police department's Fatal Accident Crash Team.
