Tiny Portsmouth yard gets big Navy contract

Associated Naval Architects Inc. has won a $1.4 million contract to renovate a barracks barge for the Navy. The tiny Portsmouth shipyard on the Elizabeth River's Western Branch will probably hire 25 to 30 workers to complete the 6-month job, said Bill Craft, the yard's president. It employs about 60 people. The job involves rehabilitating the barge's living spaces, replacing its heating and air-conditioning systems and dry docking the barge and painting its hull.
