Lt. Col. Nelson C. Ritchie, 75, died Jan. 4, 1996, in Health South Medical Center in Richmond.
A native of Haddon Heights, N.J., and Surry County, Mr. Ritchie was the son of the late Frank S. and Nellie Simmermon Ritchie. He retired from the U.S. Air Force in 1971 after serving in World War II, the Korean and Vietnam conflicts. He served as a pilot in both World War II and Korea. During his career, he received several awards including the Legion of Merit and the Distinguished Flying Cross. He served on the Surry County School Board; was a member of the Surry Ruritan Club; and served as the first chairman of the Pork, Pine, and Peanut Festival at Chippokes Plantation in Surry. He was also a member of the Regional Health Commission in Surry.
He is survived by his wife, Dorothea M. Ritchie; three daughters, Susan Ritchie-Barritt of Newport News, Charlotte Ritchie-Goo of Reston, Martha Ritchie-Wilson of Manassas; two sisters, Christine Powers and Catherine Judson, both of Willow Street, Pa.; and five grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at Ritchie Memorial Church in Claremont on Sunday at 2:30 p.m. by the Rev. Dr. Boston Lackey. Burial will be in the Claremont Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the service. Memorial donations may be made to the American Lung Association, 5349 E. Princess Anne Road, Norfolk, Va. 23502.
