``Leonette Adler: Circle of influence,'' an exhibit of artist and teacher Leonette Adler and her students, will open Jan. 12 at the Arts Center in the 1846 Courthouse at the corner of Court and High streets.
The exhibit, which continues through Feb. 25, will explore the development of art education in the classroom as students and teacher work together through three, 12-week foundation programs that include drawing, three-dimensional work and color studies. It also will allow the viewer to compare the similarities and differences of work and the influence teacher and students have on one another.
Adler's work in the exhibit is inspired by nature with paintings that reflect the beauty of locations such as the Lake Districts of England, the moors of Yorkshire, the Swiss Alps and the Italian countryside.
Adler, an art teacher at Norfolk Academy's Upper School for 20 years, holds a bachelor of fine arts in Art Education from Hunter College, New York.
Her work has been exhibited in the Chrysler Museum, Norfolk; the Virginia Beach Center for the Arts; The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, Richmond; the Butler Art Institute, Ohio; Gibbs Gallery, Charleston, S.C.; and Springfield Museum, Mass.
An opening reception for the artist will be held from 3 to 5 p.m. Jan. 14. The reception is free to museum members. A donation of $3 is requested from nonmembers. At 10 a.m. Jan. 15, Adler will give a personal tour of the gallery as part of the Docent Orientation Program, which is free.
The Arts Center is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday.
