THE LIGHTS FLICKERED, BUT ODU DIDN'T FALTER WEATHER OR NOT: 40 HIGH SCHOOL SPORTS EVENTS HANG FIRE . . . OR ICE TODAY.

Sunday's slushy weather didn't keep 150 or so diehards away from the Old Dominion field house to see the Lady Monarchs' home conference opener against American University. And things got a little tense in the first half.

Not on the scoreboard. The Lady Monarchs romped to a 15-1 lead and were up 47-18 at the half behind American's dismal 21 percent shooting effort from the field.

The drama came midway through the first half when, without warning, the lights dimmed. Play stopped and the arena became as silent as a snowy Christmas morning.

ODU coach Wendy Larry looked concerned, wondering if the game would be stopped.

``The lights went out,'' she said.

Eagles coach Jeff Thatcher was quick to reply: ``That happened about 10 minutes ago,'' he said.

Play continued and ODU rolled up its 10th win of the season, 94-39.

Vicki L. Friedman School's out

Snow and ice canceled 14 local high school events Monday, and more could fall victim to the weather today.

Some 40 boys and girls basketball games, gymnastics meets, swimming meets, volleyball games and wrestling meets are scheduled for today, but if school is not open, the events will not be contested. Most area school districts and private schools have a policy that does not allow athletic events to be played on days when school has been canceled for weather reasons. by CNB
