An Army demolition team removed a World War II artillery shell from an eroding sand dune on the James River last week, officials said.
The 7-inch shell, which contained no explosives, was found during an Army site investigation at Tidewater Community College.
The land was used previously as a weapons depot and is now under investigation by state and federal officials concerned that live shells and dangerous residues may still exist, said Bill Brown, an Army Corps of Engineers spokesman in Norfolk, on Tuesday.
