The Police Department is scheduled to receive a $520,000 federal grant to hire seven police officers, officials said this week.
The grant, part of the Crime Bill, will be used to increase community-policing efforts in neighborhoods and high schools, police said.
The City Council must vote to accept the grant and agree to pay matching funds, if needed, according to police spokesman Lou Thurston.
Thurston said the details of the grant were not available.
The department will be notified of the specifics within a few weeks.
The grant is the third federal grant the department has received in less than two years.
