Newport News Shipbuilding won a pair of contracts from the Navy this week worth $25.8 million. The larger of the two is an add-on to a previously awarded contract to prepare the support barge for the refueling of the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier Nimitz. The barge will store spent nuclear fuel taken from the Nimitz's reactors. It was last used during the Enterprise refueling. The contract adds $19.5 million to the contract the yard won earlier this year. The giant Peninsula shipyard also won a $6.3 million contract for aircraft carrier engineering support services.
