REMEMBERING MARTIN LUTHER KING

ILLUSTRATION: Color photos by Drew C. Wilson, The Virginian-Pilot

A portrait of the slain civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King

Jr., above, served as a centerpiece at a worship service in his

memory Thursday night at Sheep-Harney Elementary School in Elizabeth

City. Choral members, left, from Northeastern High School, sing

inspirational melodies during the worship ceremony. Elizabeth City

and Elizabeth City State University will share their traditional

observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Monday. A program will

be held outside City Hall at 10:30 a.m., after a march from the ECSU

campus. And today, a celebration will be held at 1 p.m. at Manteo

High School for the slain civil rights leader.
