Billy McKewen, 75, of the 4500 block of Old Princess Anne Road, died Jan. 12, 1996, in Virginia Beach.
Mr. McKewen was born in DeWitt, Ark., and was retired from the Navy after 27 years. During his naval career, he served on the following submarines: USS Tambor, Cubera, Sea Lion, Bumper, Ray and Cobbler. He was a member of Fleet Reserve Branch (NU)40, Tidewater Chapter of Submarine Veterans of World War II. A submarine memorial service will be conducted by the Tidewater Submarine Veterans of World War II.
Survivors include his wife, Jeanette F. McKewen of Virginia Beach; two daughters, Janet Springer of Oklahoma and Kathleen Griffin of Virginia Beach; a son, James McKewen of Virginia Beach; two grandchildren, Jason Smith of Virginia Beach and Melissa Smith of Oklahoma.
A memorial service will be conducted Monday at 3 p.m. by the Rev. Dr. L. Lawson Byrd and Mr. McKewen's friend, Les Emory in Smith and Williams Funeral Home, Kempsville Chapel, Virginia Beach. Military honors will be accorded following the services. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial donations be made to Virginia Prostate Center, 600 Gresham Drive, Room 205, Norfolk, Va. 23507, attn: Diane Row.
