SEMINAR TO OFFER TIPS FOR CATCHING MORE FISH

The Virginia portion of the Salt Water Sportsman National Seminar Series is set for Saturday at the Virginia Beach Pavilion.

The eight-stop series began in 1988 and made its first and only local stop in 1991 - attracting 900 professional and amateur anglers looking for that all-important tip to catching more fish.

The event will run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. with an hour break at noon and the cost is $35. The format is for sessions of approximately one hour each to be held on individual species - each being run with either the host of ESPN's Mark Sosin's Saltwater Journal or Salt Water Sportsman Magazine senior editor George Poveromo leading two or three local experts through how-to, where-to and when-to methods for that particular species.

The staff will use several medias and visuals to help get their points across.

``After the last series we held in your area, we had several charter skippers chat with us about how they managed to pick up three or four things they felt would help them in their day-to-day fishing,'' Poveromo said. ``And these are your experienced professionals. The number of recreational fishermen who pick up things is even greater.

``We use a rapid-fire approach and try to touch on lots of different things.''

Regional experts helping Sosin and Poveromo with all the details will be Capt. Bob Eakes, an innovative inshore and offshore authority and a pioneer of North Carolina's bluefin tuna fishery; Capt. Skip Smith, an offshore pro who has created numerous trolling techniques; Dr. Mitchell Roffer, a nationally acclaimed authority on locating productive water surface temperatures and ocean circulation features; Keith Nutall, a Gloucester-based cobia, trout, drum and striped bass specialist; Bill Hall, one of the area's top Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel striper fishermen; and Claude Bain, director of the Virginia Saltwater Fishing Tournament and an accomplished angler.

Saturday's topics of conversation will include live-baiting for trophy stripers, coaching big rockfish on artificial lures, cobia tricks, red and black drum tactics, trout fishing, bottom-bouncing techniques, spadefish, temperatures and circulation awareness, big king mackerel techniques, setting up effective offshore trolling spreads, chunking and chumming for yellowfin tuna, bluefin tuna blitzes and new wave marlin tactics.

Tickets can be obtained by calling 1-800-448-7360 or at the door beginning at 8 a.m.

What a knockout: Last week's fight card at the Fort Story gym turned out to be even better than last year's in terms of fund-raising benefits.

The boxing wasn't bad either.

Last year's card raised about $800 for the Fort Story morale, welfare and recreation fund, but took in more than $1,000 at last week's show.

The card featured several members of the Navy and Norfolk Boxing Club. There were also two Army fighters.

Winners were Rafael Beltran in a 147-pound novice fight over Luis Nieves; George Horvath over Patrick Mayer in the 139-open division; Calvin Jones over Justin Epting at 165-open; Benjamin Bundy over Lamont Gorum at 156-open; Juan Thompson over Oscar Valle at 125-open; Lance Watkins over Mike Martinex at 147-open; Lawrence Jones over Arturo Lopez at 147-open and Ken Horseley over Steve Greenlee at super heavyweight-open.

Antonio Bryant won himself a spot on the All-Navy team with a victory over Kim Evans in the 156-open division. MEMO: Got an interesting sports-related story to tell? If so, call The Beacon
