Linda Byrd, a 25-year veteran educator, has been appointed principal of the new Hickory High School, now under construction in rural Hickory in southern Chesapeake.
The school, scheduled to open in the fall, is being built in response to rapid growth, and it will increase to six the number of high schools in the city. Officials said it is the first time since 1972 that the city has added a new high school.
Byrd, currently principal of Crestwood Middle School, will assume her duties Feb. 1. Schools spokesman Tom Cupitt said Byrd will have plenty to do over the next six months: hiring staff, ensuring supplies are available and performing a multitude of other housekeeping chores involved in opening a new school.
``She has her work cut out for her,'' Cupitt said.
Byrd, 47, began her career as a biology teacher at Crestwood High School in 1970. She moved into central administration in 1986 as an administrative assistant in math and science. She became assistant principal at Oscar F. Smith High in 1987 and principal of Crestwood in 1990.
Cupitt said Milton Ottley, now assistant principal at Crestwood, will become interim principal at Crestwood after Byrd leaves. by CNB
