Sherwood Earl Exum, 72, beloved husband, father and grandfather, went home to be with his Lord Thursday, Jan. 18, 1996.
He was born Jan. 29, 1923, in Rocky Mount, N.C., son of the late Lee Exum and Anna Exum Avent Burgess.
Mr. Exum was founder and chairman of the board of Goco Oil Company Inc., established in 1963. He received a B.S. degree in business administration from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill; was a very active member of First United Methodist Church; and was a U.S. Army veteran serving in World War II.
Surviving are his wife of 48 years, Dorothy Marshall Exum; a son, Sherwood Earl Exum Jr. and wife Susan Black Exum of Rye, N.Y.; one daughter, Marsha Exum Montague and husband Harry Mann Montague of Charlottesville; seven grandchildren, John Marshall Montague, William Mann Montague, Martha Lee Montague, Margaret Ann Montague, all of Charlottesville, Geoffrey Graham Exum, Kathryn Harper Exum and Caroline McClelland Exum, all of Rye.
A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday in First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Byron K. Wilkinson Sr. officiating. Interment will follow in Monticello Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Saturday at Hill and Wood Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to First United Methodist Church, 101 E. Jefferson St., Charlottesville, Va. 22902 or The Covenant School, 1000 Birdwood Road, Charlottesville, Va. 22902.
