Dale W. Pape, 47, of 1830 Litchfield Road, died Sunday at St. Mary's Hospital in Waterbury, after a long illness. He was the husband of Catherine E. O'Neil Pape.
Mr. Pape was born in Bronx, N.Y., July 6, 1948, the son of William A. Pape of Norfolk, and the late Doris Geisi Pape. He was raised in Norfolk and attended local schools. He graduated from Tidewater Academy in Norfolk and attended Old Dominion University. In 1971, he moved to Connecticut where he lived in Woodbury and Southbury before moving to Watertown in 1978.
He was a pioneer and extremely well-known in the data communications industry. He worked all over the world and designed communications networks for the Navy, Memorex, Network Equipment Technologies and General Data Comm. At the time of his illness, he was a network engineer with Cross Comm Corp. of Marlboro, Mass.
He was active in Watertown youth sports. He was the treasurer of Water Oak Little League. He was an announcer of Pop Warner Football Games for Cable 5. He was an avid musician and during his youth, he played keyboard in a band in the Virginia Beach area.
Besides his wife and father, he leaves three sons, Matthew D. Pape of Watertown, William R. Ritch of Fort Meyers, Fla., and Timothy J. Ritch of Oakville, Conn.; a daughter, Diane M. Hotchkiss of Waterbury; and two grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Thursday from Hickcox Funeral Home, 195 Main St., Watertown, to St. John the Evangelist Church for Mass. Burial was in Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Watertown. Contributions may be made to Cancer Care Inc., 1180 Avenue of the Americas, New York, N.Y. 10036.
