650,000 IN BACK OVERTIME PAY

The city has paid $650,000 in back overtime pay to 46 police detectives and animal control officers to settle two lawsuits.

This is the third time since September that Norfolk has settled federal lawsuits by police officers who accuse the city of violating federal overtime laws. Earlier, the city paid $475,000 to 26 K-9 officer and $250,000 to 44 police sergeants, lieutenants and captains.

That brings the total paid by the city to $1.375 million, said the officers' attorney, Andrew M. Sacks.

The latest settlement will be split evenly among the 39 detectives and seven animal control officers, Sacks said. That means each officer will receive $14,130 before legal fees are deducted. The city also has agreed to review its pay policy for animal control officers, who are sometimes work weekends and after-hours without pay, Sacks said.

One final overtime lawsuit filed by about 65 Norfolk police investigators is still pending. by CNB
