THREE STUDENTS, who have displayed leadership, service, dependability and patriotism, were presented Good Citizenship awards recently by the Constantia Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution.
The DAR has recognized outstanding high school seniors for more than 50 years.
One recipient from each of Suffolk's high schools was chosen by faculty and classmates.
Award winners were Therbia Ulysses Parker Jr. of Lakeland High School, Margaret Leigh Lynch of Nansemond-Suffolk Academy and Shavonda Renee Sherrod of Nansemond River High School.
Therbia Parker is involved in several scholastic and civic activities. He is a member of the CHROME Club, Ecology Club and the Parent Teacher Student Association.
A member of the Drama Club, Therbia has appeared in Lakeland's productions of ``Bye, Bye, Birdie'' and ``Little Shop of Horrors.''
He was a delegate at Boy's State in 1995, a representative at the I Dare You International Youth Leadership Conference, and a Superintendent's Student Advisory representative from 1993 to 1996.
Therbia's civic activities include: junior volunteer at Southampton Memorial Hospital, ACT-SO participant, volunteer for Special Olympics, president of Suffolk Youth NAACP, and a volunteer for the Muscular Dystrophy Telethon.
Other honors and awards presented to Therbia include the 4-H State Congress Gold Medal in Drama, ACT-SO Bronze Medal in Drama, 1993 Martin Luther King Jr. Essay Contest winner for Suffolk, 1993 U.S. Coast Guard Essay Contest Honorable Mention and 4-H awards.
He participates in the choir, usher board, Sunday School and the Youth Fellowship of the Laurel Hill United Church of Christ.
Therbia, who plans to attend Longwood College and major in therapeutic recreation or special education, is the son of Marva L. Parker.
Margaret Leigh Lynch has spent 2,000 hours doing volunteer work with the Happy Club, an organization formed to support Operation Smile. Operation Smile provides free reconstructive surgery for indigent children around the world.
Margaret has been a member of the Happy Club for eight years and has served as president for the past two years. She has traveled to the Philippines as an Operation Smile volunteer and worked with children awaiting surgery. She also has served as a representative to the Operation Smile International Youth Council and worked in local inner city dental clinics sponsored by Operation Smile.
Margaret is a member of the Student Council, National Honor Society, Prom Theme Committee, Co-ed Hi-Y, Cultural Exchange Club, and Students Against Drunk Driving.
Athletic activities include varsity soccer and basketball. She has received varsity letters in both sports.
Margaret's scholastic achievements include Randolph-Macon Woman's College Book Award, National Honor Society, Prudential Spirit of the Community Award nominee, Pilot Club Scholar, Hampton Roads Young Achiever nominee and Discover Award Tribute Award nominee.
Margaret, who plans to attend a liberal arts college, is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Benjamin P. Lynch Jr.
Shavonda Renee Sherrod has proven herself a leader at Nansemond River. An athlete, she has participated in girls' track and field events. She is also a varsity cheerleader and has served as secretary of the Varsity Cheerleading Club.
Academic awards include Beta Club membership, Hampton Roads' Young Achievers nomination, Nansemond River academic letter, The Virginian-Pilot Scholastic Achievement Team and Virginia High School League Academic Award.
Shavonda was selected to attend the Summer High School Apprenticeship Research Program in 1994 and the Hampton University/Howard Hughes Medical Institute in 1995.
She has been treasurer of the CHROME Club and a member of Future Business Leaders of America and the French Club.
Recently, Shavonda and other Beta Club members helped prepare fruit baskets for a local nursing home.
Shavonda plans to attend college and major in molecular biology.
