SITTING AND ROCKING WILL BENEFIT CHARITY

The American Cancer Society is sponsoring its annual Rock-a-Thon from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday.

Individuals and representatives of some local companies will be at Nansemond-Suffolk Academy to participate in the money-raising event. Last year's netted about $11,000.

The money is raised by participants who receive pledges for each hour they sit and rock.

There is a great deal of camaraderie, an opportunity to make new friends, getting together with them to talk, play games or just relax and enjoy the daylong entertainment.

Drop-in visitors are welcome. Here's the schedule:

9 a.m. - Saxophonist Luefras Robinson and pianist Andria Fisher.

10 a.m. - Suffolk Community Chorus.

11 a.m. - Folk singer Molly McGee.

11:45 a.m. - The Lakeland Cavalier Singers.

1 p.m. - Tommy Newsom, formerly with The Tonight Show Band, performing with the Nansemond-Suffolk Academy Jazz Ensemble.

2 p.m. - Storyteller Lisa Cross.

2:45 p.m. - Rhapsody Breeze, a woodwind quartet from Lakeland High School.

3:15 p.m. - Bagpiper, Dr. Jack Lyle of Suffolk.

4 p.m. - Southside Ballet School, Smithfield.

4:15 p.m. - Entertainment by members of The Fine Arts Center of Suffolk.

That will be followed by a visit from Steve LePage of Norfolk, a cancer survivor who will talk about his experience and share his thoughts about the importance of supporting others.

Following that, there will be recognition of other cancer survivors who will be at the Rock-a-Thon. Anyone else who has survived the disease is invited to attend. MEMO: For information on the American Cancer Society Rock-a-Thon, call Leroy
