BOBBY OWENS FILES FOR RE-ELECTION

Longtime Dare County Board of Commissioners Chairman Robert V. ``Bobby'' Owens Jr. has filed for re-election to his post on the seven-member body.

Owens is running for the District 2 seat, which includes Nags Head, Kill Devil Hills and Colington. Owens, a Democrat, registered as a Nags Head resident.

In November, the Dare County Board of Elections dismissed allegations that Owens was illegally elected to the governing panel. A Kill Devil Hills resident who unsuccessfully ran against Owens had filed a formal challenge with the elections panel, accusing Owens of living outside the commission district he was elected to represent. The challenge said Owens owned a home in Nags Head but really lived in Manteo.

Owens acknowledged that he and his wife, Sarah, also have a home in Manteo - but that his residence is in Nags Head and always has been.

Earlier this month, Kill Devil Hills resident Tommy G. Perkins filed to run against Owens in the upcoming board elections. Perkins is running as a Libertarian.
