A 235-foot barge loaded with 630,000 gallons of diesel fuel ran aground Thursday off Tangier Island in the Chesapeake Bay.
There were no injuries and no pollution, according to Coast Guard Lt. Kerstin Rhinehart, a spokeswoman.
Rhinehart said the barge was being towed by the tug Charleston to Delaware when it became mired about 2:30 p.m. The Coast Guard said the barge hull was not breeched and was resting on hard sand about 4 miles east of the island.
A Coast Guard cutter was on the scene, as well as a helicopter and pollution experts, Rhinehart said.
The tug's captain told the Coast Guard he believed he could refloat the barge at the next high tide late Thursday. by CNB
