MAN DIES IN FIRE

A 77-year-old resident of a South Richmond home for adults with disabilities died in a fire.

Police patrolling the area about 11:45 p.m. Saturday saw Forest Johnson on fire on the front porch of the Oasis Home for Adults, fire Division Chief John Tunstall said.

The other 10 residents were evacuated safely from the 1 1/2-story, wood-frame building, said fire Captain Don Horton.

The police officers who spotted the fire called the Fire Department and then rescued a man at the rear of the building. Tunstall said firefighters arrived within minutes, despite snow- and ice-covered roads.

The fire's cause is under investigation, but Tunstall said it was not considered suspicious.
