CARJACKING SUSPECT NABBED

A chase that began in James City County ended in Newport News on Friday night with a wreck and the capture of two men.

State police spokeswoman Tammy Van Dame said that at about 7:30 p.m., a James City County police officer spotted a car that had been stolen in a carjacking earlier in the day in Norfolk. He followed the car down Virginia Route 199, and state police joined the chase when the car got on Interstate 64 eastbound.

The chase never exceeded the speed limit by more than 20 mph, but the driver refused to stop.

The car, a 1995 Geo, exited on Fort Eustis Boulevard and continued down to Warwick Boulevard. Newport News police joined the chase, which finally reached the Newport Crossing Shopping Center about 8 p.m.

In the parking lot, the car went over a median and dropped about 3 feet to a section of parking lot below. The two men inside jumped out and fled.

State police pursued and caught the passenger, who was identified as Allen E. Maxwell, 20, of Newport News.

Newport News officers captured the driver, identified as Michael Young, 19, also of Newport News.

Police found a .22-caliber revolver under a seat in the car.

Maxwell was charged by state police with having a concealed weapon, possession of a weapon by a convicted felon and grand larceny. He is also wanted on at least 14 other charges in Newport News, York County, Virginia Beach and Norfolk.

Young was charged with driving without a license, having a concealed weapon, reckless driving, attempting to elude police and grand larceny.
