Several Virginian-Pilot writers and a photographer were among local journalists honored by Hampton Roads Black Media Professionals on Saturday night at the organization's seventh annual Echoes of Excellence awards.
The black-tie ceremony at Harrison Opera House was emceed by CNN news anchors Andrea Arceneaux and Leon Harris.
The winners in newspapers, radio and television were chosen for work that touched, and in many cases shaped, the lives of African Americans in Hampton Roads.
The Pilot's winning entries included series on affirmative action and special education and a profile of a defensive end for the Hampton Roads Sharks, Darryl Nimmo.
Hampton Roads Black Media Professionals, a nonprofit network with more than 70 members, provides scholarships to minority college students in media-related fields; supports students interested in media careers; provides professional insight into media coverage; and helps media professionals advance their careers.
