North Carolina Power customers set an all-time record for electricity demand Monday morning as Arctic cold gripped the southeastern United States.
The demand for electricity throughout the company averaged 14,910 megawatts between 7 and 8 a.m. Monday. That broke the old record of 14,877 megawatts set Jan. 19, 1994. North Carolina Power serves 99,600 customers in northeastern North Carolina.
Despite the demand on its system, the company on Monday was able to sell about 1,500 megawatts to other utilities in the region experiencing high demands for electricity.
Moderating temperatures in North Carolina Power's service area reduced demand Tuesday. by CNB
