A brief chase of a suspected drunken driver ended grimly late Friday when the man pulled a gun and shot himself.
He died later at a hospital.
Police spokeswoman Elizabeth Jones said police received a call just before 11 p.m. reporting that a man was driving erratically on Greenbrier Parkway near Military Highway.
A police officer spotted the car, a Geo Metro, a few minutes later. The driver refused to stop.
Additional police units joined a pursuit and set up a rolling roadblock, boxing the car in and forcing it to a stop. Just as the car stopped, however, officers saw the driver put a handgun to his mouth and then to his chest. He then shot himself.
The man, identified as Keith Allen Hokanson, 31, of the 800 block of Lynnhaven Parkway, died after arriving at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital.
