In indoor track:
PORTSMOUTH - Rallying in the final three events, the Western Branch boys won their third consecutive Southeastern District indoor track championship Wednesday at Churchland.
The Norcom girls won their first title ever in a cakewalk.
The Western Branch boys finished with 96 points. Deep Creek was second with 86, followed by Churchland (71), Norcom (63), Great Bridge (46), Oscar Smith (41), Indian River (30) and Wilson (20).
Trailing Deep Creek, last year's state champion after a runner-up finish in the district, and Churchland throughout the three-day competition, the Bruins picked up 35 points in the last three events.
Entering the final event, the 1,600-meter relay, Western Branch had vaulted into a 7-point lead over the Hornets and wrapped up the crown with a second-place finish.
Two boys records were broken Wednesday. Jason Buckley of Great Bridge posted a 1:05.84 in the 500 meters to clip a fraction of a second (1:06) off his two-year-old mark.
Churchland's Jamin Elliott had a 47-foot, half-inch triple jump to better the old standard of 45-8 by Rasha Joyner of Indian River in 1994.
On Monday Jessie Grant of Indian River set a long jump record of 22-6 1/2 and Brian Hunter of Great Bridge broke the high jump record, clearing 6-5.
``I was concerned after we dropped a baton in the 800 relay but we battled back and finished strong,'' said Western Branch coach Wade Williams.
In the girls division Norcom piled up 132 points. Great Bridge was runner-up with 93, followed by Deep Creek with 66, Oscar Smith with 44, Western Branch with 40, Indian River with 28, Wilson with 16 and Churchland with 1.
Norcom's Brandi Smith had a record triple jump of 36-9 1/2. Her teammate, Missy Banks, had a record shot put of 41-7 on Monday.
``We've been building toward this for a few years now,'' said Norcom coach Vincent Pugh. ``And we wanted to go out of the Southeastern District as a champion.''
Norcom, Churchland and Wilson will be competing in the Eastern District next year but that conference does not have indoor track.
``We would love to be able to compete against the Southeastern teams next year if we can,'' said Pugh.
