To block a student move to form a gay-straight alliance at East High School in Salt Lake City, the community's Board of Education has banned all extracurricular clubs at the city's three public high schools. It was unclear whether this will include varsity athletic teams.
The effort to establish the alliance has triggered bitter debate in Utah where about 70 percent of the people are Mormons. Their church condemns homosexual acts.
One student, Brett Shields, greeted the board's 4-3 decision with: ``Everyone suffers because of the gays.''
