Chamber names new executive director

The local division of the Hampton Roads Chamber of Commerce on Friday named Catherine Brinkley as its executive director. Brinkley, a Suffolk native, has 20 years experience in local chamber activities. She was promoted from program administrative manager to replace Colin R. ``Randy'' Davis, who retired at the end of January. ``She knows the community and knows the chamber,'' said Jack Hornbeck, president and chief executive officer of the chamber. ``I can't think of anybody who better knows the Suffolk chamber and the people of Suffolk than Catherine.'' (Staff) Resource Bank plans stock offering in March

Resource Bank in Virginia Beach said it will offer 56,000 common shares for sale at $12.50 each in mid-March. The community bank said the stock will be offered first to existing shareholders and any remaining shares will be offered to the public. The bank will require a minimum purchase of 50 shares per investor.

Resource had 844,042 shares outstanding at yearend 1995. Its shares, which trade on the NASDAQ national market system, closed Friday at 12 1/8, down 3/8 for the day. (Staff) Riverside Health discusses merger with other chains

Riverside Health System in Newport News is conducting preliminary merger talks with at least two larger hospital chains. A five-member planning committee for Riverside, which operates five hospitals in eastern Virginia, met this week to consider its future as changes in the health care markets are spurring mergers and new working arrangements among hospitals. Riverside said the company's top choice is to stay independent, but the committee also is considering affiliations with other chains, including Nashville, Tenn.-based Columbia/HCA Healthcare Corp. and Norfolk-based Sentara Health System. Riverside has about 4,000 employees. (AP) NS engineers not on board with contract

Locomotive engineers employed by Norfolk Southern Corp. have decided not to be a party to the 5-year contract agreement reached Thursday between the nation's railroads and their union, the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers, company and union officials said Friday. A union official said there are some issues still to be ironed out between the engineers and Norfolk Southern. The two sides will meet next week to try to resolve those issues, a company spokesman said. Union contract talks have been going on for 15 months at the national and local levels. (Staff) USAir Express adds D.C. flight to Peninsula airport

USAir Express added a round-trip to Washington, D.C., to its schedule at the Newport News/Williamsburg International Airport. The commuter airline now offers six daily flights to Washington National Airport from the Peninsula airport. USAir Express is the biggest carrier at the airport, offering 19 flights a day. The commuter airline serves the Washington route with 37-seat turboprop airplanes. (Staff) Mercedes-Benz recalls 44,114 cars for hood flaw

Mercedes-Benz of North America is recalling 44,114 of its 1994-95 C-Class sedans to replace a secondary hood latch that could fail and cause the hood to open, blocking the driver's view. Mercedes said the problem might occur if the hood is not closed properly after the secondary latch hook has been damaged in an accident. No such failures have been reported in the United States. A spokeswoman said Friday that there were reports of seven failures worldwide, none causing an accident. (AP) by CNB
