AFTER 125-MILE CHASE, COUPLE RUNS OUT OF GAS, SURRENDERS IN PARKING LOT

Two suspects who led police on a 125-mile chase from Kill Devil Hills to Virginia and back are being held in the Dare County jail on several charges.

Jeffrey Ray Harrison, 27, of Williamston, N.C., and Tonya Renea Price, 22, of Ahoskie, N.C., surrendered to Kill Devil Hills firefighters Thursday evening after the car Harrison allegedly stole from his mother ran out of gas in the fire station parking lot on U.S. 158.

According to Richard Glaunert, manager of the Kill Devil Hills Kmart, store employees watched a woman ``take 10 to 12 pre-recorded video tapes'' and leave.

A store security guard and two other employees chased the woman into the parking lot. They retrieved the tapes. But the woman tried to spray the security guard with pepper mace, Glaunert said.

``She didn't get him. But a scuffle ensued and, during that scuffle, her blouse was torn off,'' said Glaunert. ``We had her blouse here at the store.''

Price was wearing only a bra and pants when police apprehended her.

Harrison apparently was waiting in his mother's car in the parking lot, and took off as soon as Price got inside the vehicle. He led police on a chase, speeding up to 85 mph, and allegedly tried to run at least two law enforcement officers off the road.

Police said they didn't find any guns, drugs or contraband in the vehicle.

Officers charged Harrison with assault on a law enforcement officer in Camden County - and with the same charge in Currituck County.

He also is charged with careless and reckless driving, driving while impaired and driving without an operator's license. Harrison is being held $22,000 bail.

Price was charged with misdemeanor larceny and simple assault. She is being held on $20,000 bail.
