Dr. Lawrence E. Gary, professor of social work at Howard University in Washington and one of the nation's leading authorities on black men and mental health issues in the black community, will speak at Norfolk State University, at 11 a.m. Tuesday in the GWC Brown Memorial Hall Little Theater.
Gary is a 1963 graduate of Tuskegee Institute in Tuskegee, Ala., where he received a bachelor of science degree in social work. He later earned three graduate degrees at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Mich.
Gary will discuss the historical role of black men in America. He will also address the ambivalence on social, political and cultural issues by black men, and the impact of black consciousness and nationalism on such issues.
