GARY BLACK RESTAURATEUR WITH A TASTE FOR ADVENTURE

When the heat builds up in the kitchen of the Coyote Cafe, restaurateur Gary Black heads for the airport, hops in a plane . . .

. . . and then jumps out.

Sky diving is one of his hobbies (as well as a stress reliever) and a favorite thing to do on a day off, he says.

And for someone with a catering business as well as two restaurants, those days off are welcome indeed.

Full name: Gary David Black.

Hometown: Philadelphia, Pa.

What brought you to the Beach? Old Dominion University and the beach. Not necessarily in that order.

Birthdate: Aug. 28, 1963.

Occupation: Restaurateur.

Nickname: G.

Marital status: Single, but serious with my girlfriend Carolyn.

Children: None.

Pets: None.

What is your idea of a perfect day off? Sleeping in late, then going out for a couple of jumps, followed by a great dinner and some late-night socializing.

Last smart thing you did: Listened to my partner, Richie, and moved Coyote Cafe to its new location.

Last dumb thing you did: Let the plumbing freeze at the old location (Mojo's Voodoo Grill).

Favorite meal: Mom's lasagna and anything prepared by my crew.

Favorite movies: Any James Bond/Sean Connery and whatever is on at 3 a.m. when I get home from work.

Favorite song: ``You Don't Treat Me No Good,'' by Sonia Dada.

Last book read: ``The Cardinal in the Kremlin,'' by Tom Clancy.

Hobbies: Sky diving, snow and water skiing, golf, travel.

Secret vice: Chocolate chip cookies.

Favorite TV shows: CNN, Discovery and ``Friends.''

If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be? My tendency to procrastinate.

Favorite restaurant: I'll give you two guesses and Ingram's lunch counter.

Your favorite night on the town: Catching a movie with my girlfriend, followed by a romantic dinner.

Favorite sport: Sky diving.

Last vacation: Whitewater rafting down the Colorado River for five days in August 1995.

Worst job: Stamping out T-shirts on an old press in Ocean City, N.J., in the middle of summer.

Of what achievements are you most proud? Operating two wonderful restaurants and being able to give back to the community through a variety of charitable organizations.

What would you like as your epitaph? Trade ya! ILLUSTRATION: Staff photo by DAVID B. HOLLINGSWORTH
