Ellis Clayton Smith Sr., 78, of the 2000 block of Benefit Road, a retired machinist, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 27, 1996, in Chesapeake.
Mr. Smith was born in Kinston, N.C. He was the son of the late Ailee DeWitt and Beadie Collins Smith and the widower of Ruth Stout Smith. He was a Methodist. He was retired from the Norfolk Naval Shipyard.
Survivors include his daughter, Nancy McCormick of Chesapeake; his three sons, Ellis Clayton Smith Jr. of Norfolk, George Smith of Hampton and Gary Smith of Atlanta, Ga.; a sister, Dorothy Chrisman of Portsmouth; a brother, Winford Smith of Norfolk; and four grandchildren, Justin and Brandon McCormick and Spencer and Andrew Smith.
A funeral service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Friday in the chapel of Oman Funeral Home, Great Bridge, by the Rev. Tom Mercer. Interment will be in Good Hope United Methodist Church Cemetery, Chesapeake. The family will receive friends at the funeral home today from 4 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 8:30 p.m. and at other times at 200 B Marion Drive, Chesapeake. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, Portsmouth-Chesapeake Unit, 2730 Ellsmere Ave., Norfolk, Va. 23513.
