Rev. Canon Carnan, 88, died at the Martha Jefferson House Infirmary after an extended illness.
He was born on January 13, 1908, in Baltimore, Maryland, son of the late Lida Valiant Carnan and Charles Walter Carnan Sr. He was also preceded in death by a daughter, Val Holloway. He came to Charlottesville in 1972. He attended Augusta Military Academy, Fort Defiance, Va. He graduated from the University of Virginia in 1936, was a member of Phi Kappa Sigma Fraternity and later graduated from the Virginia Theological Seminary in 1939. The Rev. Canon Carnan was an active Priest in the Diocese of Virginia and the Diocese of Southern Virginia. Upon retirement, he became a member of St. Paul's Memorial Church, Charlottesville, Va. During World War II, he was Command Chaplain of the 12th Bomber Command in the Mediterranean Theater of Operation. He was member of Sons of the American Revolution.
He is survived by his wife, Emily Brown Carnan; his daughter, Alice C. Winn and her husband of Shelburne, Vermont; a son, Christopher Bruce Carnan and his wife of Richmond, Va.; and five grandchildren.
A service will be conducted Monday, March 4, 1996, at 11 a.m. at St. Paul's Memorial Church, Charlottesville, Va. A private burial will follow in Immanuel Church Cemetery, Greenwood, Virginia. Memorials may be sent to the Martha Jefferson House, 1600 Gordon Ave., Charlottesville, 22903 and the Charlottesville-Albemarle Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 160, Charlotteville, 22907. Hill and Wood Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
