Howard M. Cannon, 94, of the 4100 block of Dyanax St., went to be with his wife and the Lord on March 2, 1996.
Mr. Cannon was born in Middlesex County, Va., and was the widower of Ruby Virginia Piland Cannon. He retired as a machinist from the Norfolk Naval Shipyard and was a member of Rosemont Christian Church, where he was deacon emeritus and Sunday School teacher for more than 70 years. He was a 70-year member of Doric Masonic Lodge (NU)44, Chesapeake; Chesapeake First Senior Citizens Club; served as an area leader with the Boy Scouts of America for many years and was a recipient of the Silver Beaver Award.
Survivors include a daughter, Carole Cowand of Henrico, Va.; two sons, Mason Cannon of Currituck, N.C., and Jimmie Cannon of Chesapeake; a sister, Beulah Reese of Chesapeake; seven grandchildren, Susan Waterfield and David Cowand of Chesapeake, Lisa Ward of Virginia Beach, Carin Nobles of Lexington, N.C., Joy Cannon of Currituck, N.C., Amy Savage of Charlottesville, Va., and Michael Cannon of Martinsville, Va.; and five great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Tuesday in Rosemont Christian Church by the Rev. Robert Harrell and the Rev. Henry Napier. Burial will be in Chesapeake Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at Graham Funeral Home, South Norfolk Chapel, from 7 to 8 p.m. today. Memorial contributions may be made to Hope Haven Children's Home.
