Mabel Whitaker Owens of the 5000 block of Glenwood Way, died Sunday, March 3, 1996, in a local hospital.
She was a native of Norfolk and the widow of the late James A. Owens Sr. and the daughter of the late Clarence and Clarice Whitaker. Mabel was a member of Saint Thomas A.M.E. Zion Church, Norfolk, and was retired from Goodman, Seger, Hogan.
She is survived by two daughters, Muriel Owens Brothers of Washington, N.C., and Clarice Owens Jenkins of Virginia Beach; son, James Alexander Owens Jr. of Clarksville, Tenn.; sister, Audrey W. Fuller of Chesapeake; brother, Matthew E. Whitaker of Norfolk; one daughter-in-law; one son-in-law; two sisters-in-law; one brother-in-law; eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews, and many other relatives and friends.
A funeral will be conducted Thursday at noon in Saint Thomas A.M.E. Zion Church, 1700 Melon St., Norfolk, by the Rev. G.L. Scott. Burial will be in Roosevelt Memorial Park. Friends may join the family for fellowship at Pretlow and Sons' Funeral Home from 7 to 8 p.m. today. The body will be placed in church at 10 a.m. the day of the service.
