MAN ARRESTED IN BEACH BANK ROBBERY

Police said Friday that tips to Crime Solvers helped them identify and arrest a man wanted for robbing a branch of the First Union Bank of Virginia on Wednesday.

According to Lou Thurston, a police spokesman, tips were called in to Crime Solvers by people who recognized the robber after his picture, taken by a bank camera, was shown on television and in The Virginian-Pilot.

Thurston said the suspect, Jerry Wayne Young, 24, was with a 17-year-old girl near the Almost A Bank in the 1700 block of Laskin Road when he was arrested Friday.

Police said a man walked into the bank, at Virginia Beach Boulevard and Little Neck Road, about 12:40 p.m. Wednesday and handed a teller a note demanding money. The man then fled on foot with an undisclosed amount of cash. Young and the girl were charged with bank robbery and conspiracy to commit robbery.

Young's last known address was in the 300 block of Stepney Lane, Thurston said. But he apparently had not lived at that address for some time. He was being held in the Virginia Beach Correctional Center without bond and is scheduled to appear in General District Court Monday afternoon.

The girl, who was being held in Tidewater Detention Home, is scheduled to appear in Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court Monday morning.
