YOUTH ARRESTED IN TEEN'S SHOOTING THE 18-YEAR-OLD WAS WOUNDED IN A BEACH ROBBERY.

A teenager who was shot several times during an apparent robbery attempt Thursday night remained in serious but stable condition Friday, police spokesman Mike Carey said.

Jeroid A. Cross, 18, was seriously injured when a 15-year-old walked up to him, demanded money and opened fire, police said.

Carey said the suspect was allegedly using a gun that had been reported stolen.

The shooting occurred on College Park Boulevard near Dillard Place. Police said Cross, a senior at Tallwood High School, was walking home from a part-time job at a supermarket in the College Park Shopping Center about 9:30 p.m. when he was approached.

Police said the suspect pulled out a .45-caliber semi-automatic handgun and demanded money. When Cross told the youth he did not have any money, the suspect shot him several times and ran away, Carey said.

Cross, of the 1200 block of Edenham Court, was shot several times in the upper thigh and suffered a minor head wound. He was taken to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital.

``Investigators have determined that the victim and suspect knew each other from school. However, they were not friends,'' Carey said.

The suspect, whose name was not released because of his age, was arrested shortly after the shooting at a nearby residence.

He was charged with attempted armed robbery, malicious assault, use of a firearm in a felony and possession of a stolen firearm. He was being held in the Tidewater Detention Home without bond.

The Smith & Wesson handgun used in the shooting on March 3 was reported stolen from a home in the 6400 block of Duquesne Place. Carey said the theft took place between 6 p.m. Feb. 17 and 6 p.m. March 2.
