TEMPEST'S BREWING

ILLUSTRATION: Color photos by DREW C. WILSON/The Virginian Pilot

There's a strong high pressure system in a holding pattern over New

England. There's a strong low pressure system moving in from

Florida. They were expected to rub shoulders over the Outer Banks

today, putting a different sort of pressure on us mere mortals.

Above, a front-end loader shores up a berm Monday near a house off

Highway 12. Officials anticipated a significant overwash in the

area, but were not sure Monday night how severe the situation might

become. Jae Everette of Kitty Hawk, right, takes a gander at the

Atlantic after checking over a friend's Kitty Hawk cottage.
