Bob Warming, who started Creighton University's men's soccer program from scratch and in three years took it to No. 1 in the nation, has been named head coach at Old Dominion.
Warming replaces Ralph Perez, who two months ago resigned to take an assistant coaching position with the New York/New Jersey MetroStars of newly formed Major League Soccer.
Warming, named national coach of the year in 1993 by Soccer News, left Creighton before the 1995 season to become athletic director at Furman, a position he held less than a year.
Warming had posted a 131-82-20 record in 13 years as a college head coach at Transylvania, Berry and UNC-Charlotte when he was offered the chance to start the Creighton program.
Creighton began competitive play in 1990. In the next five years, the Bluejays went 72-19-7, including a 19-1 record in 1993. In his last three years at Creighton, his teams won Missouri Valley Conference titles and qualified for the NCAA tournament. When he left, Creighton was the seventh-winningest Division I program in the 1990s.
In 18 years as a head coach, his record is 203-101-20.
Old Dominion ``has a tradition of excellence in men's soccer that has been built by outstanding coaches,'' athletic director Jim Jarrett said in a prepared statement. ``Bob Warming will enhance this excellence and brings . .
The Monarchs were 10-9-1 last season.
Warming is also the chairman of the new NSCAA committee on Marketing College Soccer and chairs the NCAA Division I Coaches Ad Hoc Committee.
``I have long admired the commitment to a quality athletic program at (ODU) in general and the soccer program in particular,'' Warming said, also in a prepared statement. ``My philosophy at both UNC-Charlotte and Creighton, which I hope will be successful at (ODU), is for a high-energy, attacking style of soccer.''
