Dr. Larry K. Pickering of Norfolk has been designated as the first holder of a new chair in pediatric research at Eastern Virginia Medical School.

The chair was endowed through a gift to Children's Hospital of The King's Daughters.

Pickering, internationally known for his investigative work in pediatric infectious diseases, is professor and vice chairman for research in the EVMS departments of pediatrics and director of the Center For Pediatric Research, a joint program of EVMS, the department of pediatrics and CHKD.

Lynnette E. Fitch of Norfolk, an eighth-grade English teacher at Larkspur Middle School, wrote an article published in the Virginia English Bulletin, a journal of the Virginia Association of Teachers of English. The article, ``Using Group Skits As an Alternative Assessment Method,'' describes methods she designed and implemented in her classes.

The Norfolk and Virginia Beach chapter of the National Society Children of the American Revolution won the best society in Virginia for the third time in a row at the 69th national conference in Williamsburg, March 1-3. At the conference, Nathanael Ellwood Clark, son of Mr. and Mrs. Russ Clark of Norfolk, and Patrick Burgess Hitchings, son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert B. Hitchings of Norfolk and a sophomore at Catholic High School, received the DAR Good Citizen award from the DAR Providence Society, Burke, Va. In addition, Clark, a junior at Old Dominion University, received the CAR cup.

Jane Heller Frieden of Norfolk has been chosen to be included in the 14th edition of ``Marquis Who's Who in the World.'' She previously has been included in ``Who's Who in America'' and ``Who's Who of American Women.''

MILITARY PEOPLE

Michael G. Fitch, son of George and Joan Fitch of Norfolk, recently was promoted to the rank of sergeant and received the Army Achievement Medal. A 1989 honor graduate of Granby High School, Fitch is serving in Seoul, South Korea.

Marine Cpl. Raymond L. Kimble, son of Carlos and Carolyn Johnson of Norfolk, has returned to Camp Pendleton, Calif., after completing a six-month deployment with the 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit aboard the ships of the USS New Orleans Amphibious Ready Group.

Navy Petty Officer 2nd Class John B. Keith recently reported for duty aboard the aircraft carrier USS Enterprise, whose home port is Norfolk. Keith's wife, Sandra, is the daughter of Geradine Kinee of Norfolk.

Nelson Smith, supply division supervisor for Commander Naval Base Norfolk, recently was selected as his command's 1996 Civilian of the Year. In addition to receiving various gifts from the Norfolk community and service agencies, Smith was awarded the Department of Navy meritorious civilian service medal and a cash award.

CAMPUS NOTES

Joshua Bradley, son of Marty and Johanna Bradley of Norfolk, was named to the dean's list for the fall semester at the U.S. Military Academy, West Point, N.Y. Bradley, a 1995 graduate of Maury High School, also recently was named Brigade Soldier of the Quarter.

The following Norfolk residents made the dean's list for the fall semester at Virginia Tech: Jacob S. Blevins, Eric J. Mayfield, Eric C. Mayo, Kristin Vannatta, Robert B. Williams, Amy D. Wills and Christopher P. Yoder.
