Carol Burch Ragan, 47, a native of Virginia Beach, died March 6, 1996, after being struck by a vehicle in Gulf Shores, Ala.
Ms. Ragan was the daughter of the late Commander Malcolm Stewart Ragan and Violetta Weems Ragan. She was a graduate of Virginia Beach High School and attended Peace College in North Carolina and Friends World Institute in New York.
Ms. Ragan was an avid adventurer who had twice sailed around world. She had traveled extensively in the United States, Europe, Southeast Asia and Africa. She was an advocate for the abolishment of worldwide racial prejudice and an active supporter of animal rights.
Her various and unusual careers included secretary for the Senate Appropriations Committee of the Maryland State Legislature, owner and operator of a yacht maintenance company, executive secretary for Levi Strauss International, and executive secretary for Marcona Corporation, one of the largest shipping companies in the world.
She is survived by her sister, Ann Deshon Ragan, and brother, Robert Malcolm Ragan, both currently of Gulf Shores, Ala.; and a host of loving family and friends.
A private service will be held Sunday, March 24, 1996, at 1 p.m. and will be performed by Pastor Vinny Losciale. The family will receive friends at the home of Mrs. Barbara Lyle at 207 70th Street, Virginia Beach, from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday evening. Memorial donations may be made to the Virginia Beach Rescue Squad at P.O. Box 945, Virginia Beach, Va. 23451 and the Virginia Beach S.P.C.A. at 3040 Holland Road, Virginia Beach, Va. 23456.
