Col. Robert Sears Dorsey, 79, U.S. Air Force, retired, of the 5000 block of Beaumont Drive, Virginia Beach, died Monday, March 18, 1996, in Norfolk.
Col. Dorsey retired from the U.S. Air Force in 1964 after 22 years of service. He had flown with the 319th Bomb Group in the European and African theaters. He was a command pilot since 1957 and had served in a number of staff assignments, including the War Plans Division, Joint Chiefs of Staff, in Washington, D.C. His last assignment before his retirement was as Joint Plans Officer for the unified Atlantic Command Staff in Norfolk. He was the recipient of the Air Medal, and upon his retirement was presented the Legion of Merit by Adm. H.P. Smith.
After his retirement from the Air Force, he practiced law for 24 years, retiring in 1988 as Senior Partner from Hofheimer, Nusbaum and McPhaul, P.C. He was a graduate of the University of Virginia Law School, where he served as Editor in Chief of the Law Review, for which he received the Pi Delta Epsilon Annual Journalistic Award in 1951. He was admitted to the Virginia Bar in 1950. During his law career he served as a substitute judge for the Norfolk General District Court, Criminal Division, from 1975-1977.
A native of Little River, Kan., his memberships include the Little Creek Naval Amphibious Base Protestant Chapel, Pittsburg Masonic Lodge (NU)187, A.F. and A.M. in Pittsburg, Kan., the Raven Society at the University of Virginia, ODK Leadership Fraternity and the Phi Delta Phi Legal Fraternity.
Survivors include his wife of 20 years, Sandra E. Dorsey; three daughters, Dianne D. Holy of Overland Park, Kan., Jeri D. Jamison of Portland, Ore., and Eileen D. Mandel of Vienna, Va.; three sons, Thomas A. Dorsey of Burke, Va., John F. ``Jack'' Dorsey of Norfolk; and Michael R. Dorsey of Valrico, Fla.; three stepchildren, Linda A. King of Fairmont, W.Va., Lawrence D. King of Virginia Beach, and Robert J. King of Albany, Ga. He is also survived by a sister, Betty D. Smith of Princeton, Ind., as well as 15 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, March 22, 1996, in Smith and Williams Funeral Home, Kempsville Chapel, Virginia Beach. Entombment will be at 3 p.m. Thursday, April 4, in Arlington National Cemetery. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial donations be made to the Kempsville Volunteer Rescue Squad, Post Office Box 62345, Virginia Beach, Va. 23462.
