Despite the conviction Monday in Massachusetts of John C. Salvi III on two counts of first-degree murder and five counts of assault with intent to murder, Norfolk prosecutors plan to try him on a charge of maliciously shooting into the building where the Hillcrest Clinic has its offices.
``As far as we're concerned, he's accused of a serious crime here and he should not escape trial simply because he's accused of serious crimes in another jurisdiction,'' said Chief Deputy Commonwealth's Attorney Norman Thomas.
Salvi, 24, walked into two Brookline, Mass., clinics on the morning of Dec. 30, 1994, and opened fire with a semiautomatic rifle.
Salvi was convicted in the shooting death of receptionist Shannon Lowney and the wounding of three other people at Planned Parenthood in Brookline. He then went to another clinic two miles away, killing the receptionist there and wounding two more people.
Salvi was arrested in Norfolk the following day when police caught him shooting into the windows of the Bel Air Building on East Little Creek Road. Prosecutors deferred charges here so he could be returned to Massachusetts.
