PARADE WATCHER HURT

An 11-year-old boy injured his hip and back Sunday when he fell off the porch of a beach road cottage while watching the St. Patrick's Day Parade, Nags Head Police Chief Charles Cameron said Monday.

The boy, whose name was not released, had been standing on the roof of a porch in the 2500 block of S. Virginia Dare Trail across from Mulligan's Restaurant. About 2:55 p.m. he fell about 10 feet to the ground, Cameron said. He landed on his hip and back but was not seriously hurt.

A Nags Head police officer patrolling the parade route on a bicycle spotted the boy. Two firefighters jumped off their truck, which was an entry in the parade, and helped the boy with a stretcher and medical attention.

The boy was taken to Outer Banks Medical Center where he was treated Sunday night and released, Cameron said.

Police estimated that between 6,000 and 8,000 people watched the St. Patrick's Day Parade in Nags Head Sunday. ``It was a much larger crowd than last year,'' Cameron said.
